A Recount of an Amazing Night

My memory of a beautiful, scenic night after a hectic day of toiling and endless endeavour.

It is said that nobody can be a better friend than your own self, and in the course of this friendship, self-love develops. However, in the presence of nature, the sense of self diminishes and dissolves into her overwhelming love, endless care, and ever-nurturing presence. It feels as if a child forgets his own being once he is cradled in his mother's lap.

The beach is one such haven of maternal love—a place where we can lose our sense of self and sink into her warm embrace. The all-encompassing skies, painted in a deep Prussian blue and bejeweled by stars, mirror the ocean below, which is bordered by frothing foam like a delicate white lace trim on Mother Nature’s dress.

Sometimes, we don't need to word our feelings; all we need is for someone to hold us so we know they have our back. A mother is the only person who holds us even in absolute silence. When you speak and know you are heard and understood far beyond what your words can express, you know you are speaking with someone who truly loves you.

I recently cherished one such lovely experience while spending some time by the beach. The cloudless, clear, and conspicuous night sky—with a moon glowing like a disco ball and stars beckoning from above—invited me to stand as a quiet spectator to their splendor. Allured by the night's charm, I stood transfixed, thoughtless, and completely thrilled by the seashore. Moonbeams danced across the horizon over the water like the alternating keys of a Casio, directing my attention toward the glorious symphony of the waves. Every crescendo aroused my curiosity for the next high, only to serve an anticlimactic low.

These unpredictable notes sent me into a rhapsody of bliss. For once, I felt entirely carefree, independent, and childlike as my smile grew wider and wider. Accentuation came from the continuous cool breeze lapping across my face. Just as an entertaining movie is heightened by a bowl of hot jalapeno-cheese nachos and a cold, fizzy drink, my experience by the seashore was enlivened by that wind.

I promenaded along the shore in a rhythmic pendulum motion, soaking in every bit of the moment like a bear licking the last drop of honey from a broken honeycomb. My eyelids grew heavy; my eyelashes closed over my eyes like curtains flapping over a window frame, shutting out the light. Mother Nature had, to say the least, lulled me to sleep. Luckily for me, home was just a short walk away—a hypnotic trance I hoped wouldn't break, carrying the memory of my mother's touch all the way to my satin pillowcase and layered blanket. Ah, what a night!
