A Wild Experience

A what-if situation for some light humorous read, give it a thought to the possibility of getting stuck inside a shopping centre. In the way we see random events taking place around us I am sure this isn't completely hypothetical.

The soft touch of satin and vibrant cotton prints mesmerized me, tempting me to try the clothes on just once. Knowing I had entered the shopping center in the "n"th hour, I knew I should hurry, but the shopaholic inside me refused to budge. Luckily, the trial rooms were vacant, save for a few others waiting outside. I slipped into the garment and—Whoo!—the lights killed. A total power cut. Just then, a voice crackled over the intercom: "Ladies and gentlemen..." but the cacophonous shrieks of petrified shoppers drowned out the rest of the announcement.

As the screams faded, I heard neighboring trial room doors unlatch. Fumbling blindly in the pitch black, my hands brushed against something rough and textured—my leather purse. I hurriedly unzipped it, frantically searching for my iPhone. My fingers finally found its cold, slippery surface and rounded corners. Relief washed over me. I switched on the flashlight, gripping the round metal handle of the trial room door with sweaty hands. Mugging up my courage and clutching my purse, I sprinted toward the entrance. The booming echo of my own frantic footsteps made me want to scream, but when I reached the glass doors and pushed, they didn't budge. I was locked in.

Panic rising, I tried calling my mother. No signal. Frustrated, I pulled the phone away only to read a terrifying disclaimer: Low Battery. I felt my throat choke. Sweeping my flashlight across the dark aisles, I spotted a shelf of Bisleri water. I realized that with the power out, the surveillance cameras were dead too. A slightly mischievous comfort hit me—half my problems were solved; I could survive on the store's inventory guilt-free.

Suddenly, a loud "Grrr" erupted from my stomach. I was famished. Scanning the shelves of eatables, I grabbed a packet of Cornitos and a pack of fresh buns. Using my pocket knife, I prepared a makeshift continental dinner right there in the dark, layering crunchy Cornitos and smooth cheese dip between the supple buns. It was lip-smacking, to say the least, looking downright gourmet in the dramatic spotlight of my phone.

I was just relishing my first bite when a distinct, chilling sound broke the silence: nibbling. My troubles weren't over. I had unexpected company sharing my dinner.

Finding myself a display chair, I wondered: would the rest of my night be filled with entertainment or pure fear? Defiantly choosing the former, I strolled over to the home appliances section and retrieved a battery-powered LED lamp, a plush neck cushion, and a magazine from a nearby rack.

Stretching my limbs on the chair, I let myself unwind. Usually, a bright light in the dead of night is harsh on the eyes, but the glow from this lamp brought pure warmth, compassion, and protection. It successfully safeguarded me from my ultimate threat—my musophobia. Before finally being lulled to sleep, I set an alarm on my iPhone—my only constant companion that had supported me through literal "dark times." The alarm would ensure I woke up and packed away my campsite before the store doors opened to the morning world.
